How to Take Action Regardless
At times, conscious growth is hard work. Especially when you aren’t in the mood for it. As you grow consciously, internal incongruence will come up. Sure. You know you should take action. But something inside you says different. And it can take many forms. It may be procrastination or a lack of desire. It can be aversion because of fear, shame or guilt. It can be a wanting or craving for something else more stimulating. Whatever it is, the challenge is choosing to take right action despite it.
So how do you do this? If you are committed enough, you feel the emotion and go on your way. Intellectually, you know better. So you just do it. Sometimes though, that option gets obscured; overwhelmed by thoughts or emotions. So here’s a four step process to keep you on track.
Identifying the Energy
1) Identify the resistance. Why are you NOT doing what you should do? Label the resistance as fear, desire, indifference, or whatever.
2) Embrace the generality. Whatever the label, it is a common to us all. We all have fear or procrastinate; just about different things and in different ways. No one is magically exempt from experiencing their humanity. It’s normal.
3) Let go of resistance. This sounds like a paradox but it isn’t. There are two ways to do this: surrender it to a Higher Power (let go, let God) or embrace the experience. Can let go of your fear of feeling fear? In other words, can you let go of resisting the sensations of it? Of course you can. You’ve dealt with far worse experiences in your life (experiencing the flu, a car wreck, etc). So move your attention away from thoughts and into the experience. The sensations are only sweaty palms, dryness of the mouth, and a tingly feeling in your solar plexus. If you place your attention on the sensations and stop resisting them, they magically go away.

4) Show kindness to yourself. As a thought or emotion comes up, show kindness to it, accept it as already being in you, and choose to work with life and within its limitations. This isn’t about forcing or pushing yourself to act. It is learning to take an attitude of non-resistance. When you stop resisting what is in you and around you, you’ll find the power to choose appropriately.
Choice always exists for you. It’s an opportunity you can’t escape it. But sometimes it does feel obscured. Always embrace your limitations as they come up. Let go resisting them. When you do, they will pass much easier. It’s OK to experience resistance, but it’s irrational to believe that it robs you of your freewill.
