Understanding the Levels of Consciousness

August 21st, 2007

One of my favorite books, Power vs. Force, introduced me to an interesting paradigm of consciousness or awareness itself. Using kinesiological testing, Dr. David Hawkins calibrated a scientifically confirmable, repeatable scale of human consciousness. The scale shows logarithmic power of one’s consciousness from levels 1-1000 (which shows the degree to which Love is present in the individual).

There are two major thresholds that the individual goes through. The first is at 200 or the level of courage. Below 200, the individual uses force to accomplish tasks. These levels increase in power in the order of shame, guilt, apathy, grief, fear, desire, anger and pride. Most of the energies below 200 hold the typical labels of “sin.” At 200, the individual has the courage to take responsibility for their freewill and begins to develop character formation. From 200-499 are the levels of courage, neutrality, willingness, acceptance and reason.

The second major shift is at level 500 or the level of love. At this level, the mind is no longer necessary and its positionalities are surrendered. Operationally, it is a shift from the linear way of experiencing reality, to a non-linear way of experiencing Reality. These levels include love, joy, peace and varying degrees of enlightenment.

Regardless of skepticism, I think this paradigm has value. Can you see how people move out of fear, into courage and up into reason? Through the intellect, the individual ascends from a lower, animalistic mind to a higher, more evolved mind. Beyond that is even rarer still. Even if its a little out there for you, I’d recommend reading Power vs. Force: The Hidden Determinants of Human Behavior. It’s worth it.
